Heartstopper, un bellissimo fumetto che spiega in modo semplice come l'amore possa variare e nascere in qualunque persona.
Charlie Spring ha 16 anni e va al college, ha da poco fatto coming out dicendo di essere gay ed è stato bullizzato per un intero anno scolastico. E’ depresso e ha seri problemi alimentari, ma tutto cambia quando il prof lo fa sedere di fianco al capitano della squadra di rugby e conosciutissimo Nick Nelson. I due, dopo un po’ incertezze, rompono il ghiaccio e diventano inseparabili amici. Ma c’è un problema: Charlie si innamora di Nick, che è evidentemente etero.
I want to tell Nick that I'm... um... in love with him. I just- I really want to tell him and- well... you know I get stressed out about stuff like this.
Tao, il migliore amico di Charlie, cerca di dissuaderlo e prova indirizzarlo nella ricerca di qualcuno che ci tiene veramente a lui, ma Charlie non lo ascolta e pian piano anche Nick scopre di provare qualcosa di più di semplice amicizia per lui, ma ignora i suoi sentimenti per paura di sbagliare. Così continuano ad amarsi segretamente fino a quando, ad una festa, Charlie finisce per baciare Nick che scappa fuori dalla stanza. Il giorno dopo Nick si presenta alla porta di Charlie per dichiarare i suoi sentimenti e il piano va a buon fine perché si baciano di nuovo e decidono di fidanzarsi. La cosa va avanti per un po’ di mesi segretamente e poi Charlie decide di dirlo a i suoi genitori che approvano pienamente, mentre Nick a bisogno di più tempo e così inizia il suo piccolo viaggio alla scoperta della sua sessualità, arrivando alla conclusione di essere bisessuale. Grazie anche all'aiuto dei suoi amici, Nick decide di dirlo a sua madre che, fortunatamente, lo sostiene. Intanto la loro relazione va avanti con qualche ostacolo, Nick scopre dei disturbi alimentari di Charlie e cerca di convincerlo a parlare con un medico o con dei familiari, ma Charlie non vuole, non riesce. Poi Nick lo aiuta a esporre la questione ai suoi genitori e tutto va “per il meglio”: Charlie viene ricoverato in un ospedale dove lo curano anche psicologicamente, ritorna dopo 4 mesi e sta molto meglio. Nick e Charlie riprendono con serenità la loro relazione comunicando a tutta la scuola di essere insieme, chissà come finirà? Manca solo il volume 5, spero esca presto!

Dopo la lettura del primo fumetto (li ho letti in inglese, ma devo dire che non si fa fatica a comprendere cosa dicono e fanno i vari personaggi), non sembrava esserci quel particolare che lo rendeva speciale, ma appena ho iniziato il secondo volume e continuato fino al quarto mi sono dovuta rimangiare quello che avevo pensato. Alice Oseman è una scrittrice fantastica, scrive di tutta la comunità LGBTQAI+ facendo capire il significato di com’è essere assessuale, gay, lesbica o aromantica esponendone le difficoltà e gli ostacoli che le persone affrontano prima di sentirsi del tutto a proprio agio con la propria sessualità. E’ molto difficile accettarsi anche perché la sessualità non si può scegliere, magari ti immagini etero e poi viene fuori che sei pansessuale e la cosa ti sconvolge, ti porta via tutte le certezze che hai avuto fino a quel momento.
Alice Oseman vuole sensibilizzare su questi argomenti soprattutto le ragazze e i ragazzi spiegando, con storie di giovani teenager, che ognuno è diverso e che non bisogna nascondere chi si è davvero per paura di essere criticato.
Questa serie di fumetti inglesi è consigliata soprattutto a noi giovani, ma anche agli adulti che vogliono saperne di più su questi argomenti ormai così frequenti nella nostra società.

Charlie Spring is 16 and in college, recently came out as gay and was bullied for a full school year. He is depressed and has serious eating problems, but everything changes when the teacher seats him next to the captain of the rugby team and the well-known Nick Nelson. The two, after a while of uncertainty, break the ice and become inseparable friends. But there is a problem: Charlie falls in love with Nick, who is obviously straight.

Tao, Charlie's best friend, tries to dissuade him from trying to keep trying and looking for someone who really cares about him, but Charlie doesn't listen to him and gradually Nick also discovers that he has something more than just friendship for him, but ignores his feelings for fear of making a mistake. So they continue to love each other secretly until, at a party, Charlie ends up kissing Nick who runs out of the room. The next day Nick shows up at Charlie's door to declare his feelings and the plan goes well because they kiss again and decide to get engaged. This goes on for a few months secretly and then Charlie decides to tell his parents that they fully approve, while Nick needs more time and so begins his little journey of discovering his sexuality, concluding that he is bisexual. Thanks also to the help of his friends, Nick decides to tell his mother who supports him wholeheartedly. Meanwhile, their relationship goes on with some obstacles, Nick discovers Charlie's eating disorders and tries to convince him to talk to a doctor or family, but Charlie doesn't want to, he can't talk about it. Then Nick helps him to explain the matter to his parents and everything is "for the best": Charlie is admitted to a hospital where they do psyche-based, but also corporal cures, he returns after 4 months and is much better Nick and Charlie resume with serenity their relationship by communicating to the whole school that they are together, who knows how it will end? Only volume 5 is missing, I hope it will come out soon!

After reading the first comic (I read them in English, but I must say that it is not hard to understand what the various characters say and do.) There does not seem to be that particular that made it special, but as soon as I started the second volume and continued until the fourth I had to take back what I had thought. Alice Oseman is a fantastic writer, she writes about the whole LGBTQAI + community by making them understand the meaning of what it is like to be a sexual, gay, lesbian or aromantic, exposing the difficulties and obstacles that people face before feeling completely comfortable with their sexuality. It is very difficult to accept yourself also because sexuality cannot be chosen, perhaps with straight images and then it turns out that you are pansexual and it upsets you, takes away all the certainties you have had up to that moment.
Alice Oseman wants to raise awareness on these topics especially girls and boys by explaining, with stories of young teenagers, that everyone is different and that we must not hide who we really are for fear of being criticized.
This English comic series is recommended above all to us young people and adults who want to know more about these topics now so frequent in our society.
